A catechist is a primary teacher of the catechism (teachings of the Catholic faith). Their responsibility is a big calling. Forming the next generation of Catholics in conjunction with their parents is a significant undertaking, but it is beyond rewarding. Catechists walk with children ages 5–18, teaching them, praying for them, and sharing in their joys and struggles. A catechist lives Christ's command to make disciples of all nations in a specific and necessary way, and their work is a fantastic contribution to Christ's mission.
All catechists are required to take a safety training course and pass a background check. Catechists also need to be organized and capable of leading (with an aide) a classroom of students for their assigned age group. Training and orientation are provided for all catechists before the start of each religious education year (beginning in September). You do not need to be a professional teacher to become a catechist. If you have questions about the role, or if you are interested in becoming a catechist, please contact Erik Diaz, our Director of Religious Education!
